South African leads Concordia salvage

first_img17 September 2013The wreck of the Costa Concordia cruise liner was finally pulled upright off the Italian island of Giglio on Tuesday following a 19-hour salvage operation, the biggest such project ever attempted – led by a South African.Salvage master Nick Sloane was hired by US firm Titan Salvage and Italy’s Micoperi to lead the massive operation to right the 290-metre, 114 000-tonne vessel, which ran aground off Giglio on 13 January 2012, killing 32 people. The salvage was “the biggest for a passenger ship ever undertaken, and the position of the hulk posed unique challenges to the 500-person international salvage team,” news agency AFP reported on Tuesday.According to AFP, the ship was dragged upright by means of 36 cables strapped across the hull, with giant water-filled tanks “the size of 11-storey buildings” welded onto the side of the Costa Concordia to act as ballast.“The man who gave the orders from a control room on a barge next to the ship was Nick Sloane, a South African with experience on some of the world’s biggest shipwrecks,” AFP reported. The news agency quoted Sloane as saying afterwards: “I’m relieved. It was a bit of a rollercoaster … The scale of it was something we’ve never seen before.”According to AFP, Sloane’s career – he starting working for South African salvage company Safmarine in 1980, and was promoted to the position of salvage master in 1991 – has taken him to six continents and two warzones.Barbie Latza Nadeau, a journalist who is working on a novel based on the Costa Concordia disaster, described Sloane, in an article published on Monday by CNN, as “sort of a cross between Russell Crowe and Prince Harry, with the type of red-freckled skin that should never be in the sun”.During their interview, Nadeau wrote, the 52-year-old Sloane “intersperses his salvage war stories with warm family tales about his long-suffering wife of 24 years, who has had to shoulder the responsibility of raising their 17-year-old twins and 10-year-old daughter while he disaster-hops around the globe.”Sloane told CNN that he had hoped to be back home in South Africa by the first week of September, but that a combination of bad weather and bureaucracy had held up the salvage operation.“I can’t leave the island for good until she does,” he told CNN, with a nod to the Costa Concordia.Project overseer Franco Gabrielli told AFP on Tuesday that the newly exposed side of the wreck would need “major repairs” before the vessel could be towed away for scrapping, which would only happen next year at the earliest.SAinfo reporterlast_img read more

All About Wood Stoves

first_img Start Free Trial Already a member? Log in This article is only available to GBA Prime Members If you’ve been heating your house with wood for years, you probably don’t need to read this article. By now, you know all about the disadvantages and inconveniences that accompany wood heat, and yet you still heat with wood — either because you genuinely love wood heat, or because you love the low cost of the fuel. If you haven’t burned down your house by now, you may even have figured out how to install and operate your stove safely. This article is addressed to a different audience: those who are thinking about buying their first wood stove. For some homeowners, especially those who haven’t lived with a wood stove, wood heat has romantic associations. Veteran wood burners know better, however. As a document from the Cornell University Cooperative Extension points out, firewood “is one of the least convenient sources of heat, … requiring time and considerable effort to fell and split trees, move wood into dry outdoor storage for at least a year, transport wood indoors, maintain an effective woodstove fire, and keep the system cleaned for safety and efficiency.” I’ll add another disadvantage: if you heat with wood, you’ll be tethered to your house all winter. You won’t be able to go away for the weekend unless your house has a backup heating system to keep your plumbing pipes from freezing.Wood heat makes the most sense for:Don’t install an outdoor wood-fired boiler (sometimes mistakenly referred to as an “outdoor furnace”). These devices are notoriously polluting and inefficient. They require lots of electricity to run and they waste much of the energy value of the firewood they burn. Moreover, they are so smoky that they will drive your neighbors crazy. In many areas of the country, irate neighbors have sued owners of… center_img Sign up for a free trial and get instant access to this article as well as GBA’s complete library of premium articles and construction details.last_img read more

Canada announces Indian Day Schools settlement

first_imgAmber BernardAPTN National NewsVictims and survivors of Indian day schools will receive compensation from the Canadian government for the abuses and harms perpetrated against them.On Tuesday Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Minister Carolyn Bennett announced Canada would settle out of court with litigants and members of a $15 billion class-action lawsuit initiated in 2009.Former students of the day schools will be eligible to receive between $10,000 and $200,000 each in compensation, depending on the harm or abuse they endured.According to the federal government, close to 200,000 Indigenous children attended the federally operated schools since the 1920s — many of whom endured cultural loss and physical and sexual abuse. The lawsuit was filed in 2009 by Garry McLean, who attended the Dog Creek Indian Day School in Lake Manitoba First Nation, on behalf of Indigenous day school survivors. In December the government announced it had reached a settlement, and that details would come early in 2019.McLean, a driving force behind the settlement, died last month.Canada is including in the settlement a $200 million investment in the McLean Day School Settlement Corporation for legacy projects that support healing, wellness, education, language, culture and commemoration. The feds say the settlement represents Canada’s commitment to fulfilling the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s calls to action. Action 29 calls on the government to work collaboratively with plaintiffs who were not included in the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement “to have disputed legal issues determined expeditiously on an agreed set of facts.”[email protected]@abernardnewslast_img read more
