Pluto Scientist Is a Brookdale Grad

first_imgMatt Hill’s journey and passion have taken him from Monmouth County and Brookdale Community College to now studying the outer reaches of our solar system.Hill, 44, works as an experimental space scientist at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland, and much to his joy is working on the New Horizons NASA program, studying particles from distant Pluto’s atmosphere.“This is really cool and it’s something I’ve always been interested in,” Hill said this week.New Horizons is a project that the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) began in 2000, launching the interplanetary space probe in 2006. The space probe has been taking photographs and atmospheric specimens to gain a better understanding of Pluto and its moons. On July 14 the New Horizons spacecraft became the first such voyage to travel to that very far-reaching dwarf planet.Pluto is approximately 4.67 billion miles from Earth.Hill works as a co-investigator and lead instrument scientist for the New Horizons project, responsible for the Pluto Energetic Particle Spectrometer Science Investigation, or PEPSSI for short. That device, “measures radiation high energy particles coming from Pluto.”What is so exciting about this, the data obtained along with the photos will “allow us to discover what we haven’t been able to study before,” Hill said.“We have the capability to study the distant parts of the solar system,” he went on, “and I think it’s valuable to do so, as much as we can,” as research can reveal who knows what, as well as the possible benefits of the practical application that can be the byproduct of these projects.Growing up in Eatontown, Hill was always fascinated by space and its exploration. “When I was younger I use always watch the Carl Sagan (the late astronomer, astrophysicist, author and TV host) stuff, read the books,” and was really interested in the NASA Voyager program. “I was excited about that.”Back then, however, the thought of earning a Ph.D. in physics must have been seen as distant a possibility as traveling to Pluto. “I did rather poorly in high school,” Hill acknowledged, though he managed to graduate Red Bank Catholic High School in 1989.After high school he took a couple of years off and eventually began attending Brookdale Community College, Lincroft.Hill majored in math and science at Brookdale, where he earned his associate’s degree. And it was there that the spark seemed to be lit showing him what he loved could actually lead to a satisfying career.“We are fortunate to have, where I grew up, a place like Brookdale,” he noted, “to help me find my way.”From Brookdale, Hill went on to attend and earn his bachelor’s degree in physics from Rutgers University. But it was while he was in graduate school at the University of Maryland he was approached by a professor and asked to help analyze data from the Voyager project. “I did and I liked it,” he remembered.“When I realized I was back in space stuff I realized this was the stuff I was interested in when I was a kid,” he recalled. After that, “It all kind of fell into place.”Hill received his Ph.D. in 2001 and has been working at the Johns Hopkins lab for the last 10 years, mostly on NASA-related projects. And this work has his passion in full flame, allowing him, “to dig in on the edges of what we know and to come up with something new that becomes something that everyone will one day understand,” he explained. “That is pretty neat.”– By John Burtonlast_img read more

PAPACOOLPAPACOOL RALLIES TO WIN $75,000 PASADENA STAKES AT ONE MILE ON TURF; TRUJILLO, D’AMATO TEAM FOR 1 ½ LENGTH SCORE IN FIELD OF NINE SOPHOMORES

first_img–30– ARCADIA, Calif. (March 21, 2015)–Attentive to the pace under Elvis Trujillo, Papacoolpapacool saved ground at the rail to the quarter pole, swung three-wide turning for home and overhauled pacesetter Anytime Anyplace and Soul Driver for an impressive 1 ½ length win in Saturday’s $75,000 Pasadena Stakes at Santa Anita. With a field of nine 3-year-olds contesting one mile on turf, Papacoolpapacool, who is trained by Phil D’Amato, got the distance in 1:36.55.“Elvis had him a little further back last time out and he was able to make up the ground on the rail,” said D’Amato. “I kind of wanted him closer today so he could get a jump on the closer. Elvis had him right where I wanted him, saving ground and stalking. He angled him out and he came with a big run…He’s a turf horse for now. I’m just happy I have an improving horse.”Off at 5-1, Papacoolpapacool paid $12.40, $7.00 and $5.00.Owned by Cellist Racing Group, LLC and Ali Nilforushan, Papacoolpapacool, a Kentucky-bred colt by Temple City out of the Saint Ballado mare Sainttwok, notched his second consecutive win going a mile on turf at Santa Anita and improved his overall mark to 7-3-1-1. With the winner’s share of $47,700, he increased his earnings to $145,350.“It was a perfect trip,” said Trujillo. “At the three eighths pole, I saw that Soul Driver was moving too early so I waited a little bit. Once we moved out, my horse was gone.”Breaking from the far outside with Martin Pedroza up, Anytime Anyplace showed the way until tackled by Soul Driver approaching the quarter pole, repelled his challenge a sixteenth out, but couldn’t hold the winner off late. Off at 13-1 Anytime Anyplace paid $11.00 and $7.00.Ridden by Gary Stevens, Soul Driver was last after a half mile, made an eye catching move four-wide going to the three eighths pole but could not sustain his run through the drive. The second choice in the wagering at 3-1, he paid $3.40 to show.Fractions on the race were 23.58, 49.17, 1:13.35 and 1:24.83.last_img read more

ODNR continues plan to monitor deer for Chronic Wasting Disease

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest Portions of Holmes and Wayne counties will retain their designation as Disease Surveillance Area (DSA) 2015-01 again this year as part of the state’s ongoing Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) surveillance efforts, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). This designation requires that additional rules be followed by deer hunters in this area.Since October 2014, 19 captive white-tailed deer have tested positive for CWD at a shooting preserve and a breeding facility in Holmes County. Since that time, ODNR Division of Wildlife staff have tested hundreds of wild deer with the cooperation of hunters and local landowners. CWD has not been detected in the nearly 1,000 wild deer tested from DSA 2015-01.The DSA includes the areas within a 6-mile radius from the CWD positive samples in Holmes County and includes: all of Franklin and Clinton townships in Wayne County, and Ripley, Prairie, Salt Creek, Monroe, Hardy, Berlin, Killbuck and Mechanic townships in Holmes. In addition, the northeast portion of Richland Township (defined by the boundary of Township Road 36 to State Route 520 to Township Road 31 to U.S. Route 62) in Holmes County falls within DSA 2015-01. This DSA designation will remain in effect at least through the 2017 deer season. The area will be mapped and posted on the division’s website at wildohio.gov.The following regulations apply within the DSA:Requires hunters to bring deer harvested within the DSA to an ODNR Division of Wildlife inspection station for CWD testing during the seven-day gun, two-day gun and muzzleloader seasons. Inspection stations will NOT be operated during the two-day youth season;Prohibits the placement of or use of salt, mineral supplement, grain, fruit, vegetables or other feed to attract or feed deer within the DSA boundaries;Prohibits hunting of deer by the aid of salt, mineral supplement, grain, fruit, vegetables or other feed within the DSA boundaries; andProhibits the removal of a deer carcass killed by a motor vehicle within the DSA boundaries unless the carcass complies with deer carcass regulations. Additional information on carcass regulations can be found at wildohio.gov.Normal agricultural activities including feeding of domestic animals as well as hunting deer over food plots, naturally occurring or cultivated plants and agriculture crops are not prohibited.Hunters harvesting deer within the DSA are required to bring their deer to a carcass inspection station for disease testing. Two locations have been designated as Carcass Inspection Stations for the seven-day gun, two-day gun and muzzleloader seasons. Both locations will be open and staffed from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The dates for these seasons are: Nov. 28-Dec. 4, Dec. 17-18 and Jan. 7-10.Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) garage, 1800 South Washington Street, Millersburg, 44654Industrial Park, 8254 County Road 245, Holmesville, 44633Hunters, including landowners, will be asked to provide their confirmation number from the game check process as well as the location where the deer was killed (property address or nearest road intersection). Tissue samples and biological data will be collected. The process should take no more than 10 minutes, however, delays are likely at lunch and immediately after dark. Hunters are strongly encouraged to complete the game check process before bringing their deer to the inspection station. However, division staff will be able to assist with checking deer.Hunters who harvest a deer and wish to have it mounted or caped are required to bring their deer to a carcass inspection station. Samples will not be taken, however, arrangements will be made to collect tissue at a later date.last_img read more

SeaRose FPSO vessel allowed to return to work on offshore oilfield for

first_imgST.JOHN’S, N.L. – Husky Energy Inc.’s SeaRose FPSO vessel has been cleared by the regulator to return to duty gathering, storing and offloading crude oil from an oilfield off the Newfoundland and Labrador coast. The Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board says it has withdrawn the suspension ordered nine days ago following actions by Husky, which include “significant organizational changes,” specifically citing the appointment of Trevor Pritchard as senior vice-president, Atlantic region, in place of his predecessor, Malcolm Maclean. It also commends Husky for completing an emergency response drill, observed by the board, as well as reviewing and improving its ice management and emergency response plans. The board suspended the floating production, storage and offloading vessel based on preliminary results of an inquiry into an incident a year ago when it failed to follow protocol and sail away as an iceberg entered its 0.25-nautical-mile ice exclusion area.In a presentation at an industry conference on Wednesday, Husky CEO Rob Peabody said he didn’t know when the suspension would be lifted but he was confident it wouldn’t affect production guidance for this year. The suspension interrupted production of about 38,000 barrels of oil per day, with about 27,000 bpd net to Husky as 70 per cent owner.Companies in this story: (TSX:HSE)Note to readers: This is a corrected story.
