Women’s Basketball Hosts Creighton on Sunday

first_imgThe impressive streak started Feb. 5, 2016 with a win over Wichita State, includes a 13-0 mark in 2016-17 and a 3-0 start this season. The streak is the third longest active streak in the NCAA and the fourth longest in MVC history. Redshirt sophomore Sara Rhine (Eldon, Mo.) led the team in scoring for the second consecutive game as she finished with 24 points on a stellar 10-of-14 shooting performance, including knocking down two three-pointers. Drake recorded 27 assists on 32 field goals, shot an impressive 56.1 percent from the floor and had 29 bench points in the win. Creighton (3-3) dropped a pair of games to PAC 12 opponents, Washington and UCLA, last week in Las Vegas. Junior Audrey Faber, a teammate of Hittner’s at Dowling Catholic, leads the Bluejays in scoring at 17.7 points per game. Creighton, which left the MVC in 2013, won the matchup in Omaha last season. The series has been back-and-forth the past four seasons with the home team winning each game. Live Audio Creighton ESPN3 Drake (4-3) closed the month of November with a thrilling home win over Iowa State, 83-80, on Thursday night. The Bulldogs held an 11-point lead over the Cyclones with just under eight minutes to go, but later trailed by four with 2:05 left in the game. Freshman Maddie Monahan (Silver Lake, Minn.) answered with a three-pointer, was fouled on the make and finished the four-point play to tie the game at 80-80. Drake then made a defensive stop on Iowa State’s next possession. After the Bulldogs called a 30-second timeout, sophomore Becca Hittner (Urbandale, Iowa) drove the lane, banked in her shot and Iowa State’s Bridget Carlton was called for a block to send the Hittner to the line for the three-point play attempt. Hittner calmly sank the free throw to put Drake up 83-80, and after a Cyclones’ timeout, Hittner blocked Carlton’s tying three-point attempt as the clock expired for the program’s 21st straight home win. The Bulldogs lead the MVC in scoring average (80.3), assists (21.6) and field goal percentage (46.6), and rank second in steals per game at 8.9. Rhine (17.1) and Hittner (13.6) are the only two non-seniors in the top six of MVC scoring leaders ranking third and sixth, respectively.
