Women’s Golf Finishes Strong in Day One of MVC Preview

first_img Day One Results The Drake University women’s golf team overcame first-round struggles with a solid second round to finish the first day of the MVC Preview at the Spirit Hollow Golf Course in third place. Drake’s 36-hole total of 629 (322-307) is one stroke behind second-place Missouri State and eight back from the leader, UNI.”After not getting to play a traditional practice round yesterday due to heavy rain, we had difficulty finding the speed of the greens in the first round,” head coach Rachael Pruett-Hornbaker of the team’s resiliency. “Thankfully today was 36 holes and the ladies kept their heads in the day and found a solid round in the afternoon.”The Bulldogs’ low-scorer through two rounds was Aimee Gerschke, who totaled 155 (78-77) and is tied for fourth place. Close behind is a trio of Bulldogs at 158 strokes through 36 holes, including the two-time reigning MVC Golfer of the Week Haeri Lee (82-76), who bounced back from a difficult first round to finish tied for 17th. Also tied for 17th are sophomore Kristen Giles and senior Sigurlaug Jonsdottir, who each fired 81 in the first round and 77 in the second round.Freshman Abby Marting rounded out Drake’s five scoring competitors in the event with a 36-hole total of 172 (90-82) which put her in a tie for 76th. Drake also sent three individuals to the event, including Erica Olberding who recorded a 165 (83-82) through two rounds, Reilly Krohe with a 178 (86-92), and Sam Paulak with a 184 (96-88).”We can be both happy with what we did accomplish today and know we have more in us. It doesn’t have to be either or, and we know that. Tomorrow will be an intense competition and a lot of fun.”The Bulldogs will begin third-round play at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning.
