India vs Pakistan, Champions Trophy 2017: Virat Kohli leads all-round India to emphatic win over Pakistan

first_imgHello and welcome to our live coverage of the ICC Champions Trophy clash between India and Pakistan at Birmingham. (SCORECARD)Pakistan Innings:India (319/3) crush Pakistan (164/9) by 124 runs (D/L). Umesh 3/30, Jadeja 2/43, Pandya 2/43  India have wrapped the game in fine fashion here. They had done most of the damage with the bat itself when they posted a par score on the board. The bowlers backed up the good work. Azhar Ali was the lone man fighting for them with a fifty but he did not get any help from the rest as they kept losing wickets at intervals.? ? #CT17 #INDvPAK pic.twitter.com/W74N4hI34a- BCCI (@BCCI) June 4, 2017Umesh Yadav was the best bowler for India, taking 3 for 30. Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja chipped in with a couple each. India didn’t field that well and the rain did threaten to play spoilsport but in the end, we had enough time for a result. A lot was expected from this contest but as has been the case in the last few years, it was another one-sided game.INDIA WIN! Hopefully we can get some wickets with the new ball,” Yuvraj Singh said in the mid-innings break. India were brilliant with the bat. Great foundation at the top and power at the back end. The Pakistan fielders walking off with their heads down shows how badly they lost the plot towards the end. India plundered 77 runs in the last five overs to finish with a par score on the board. Expect DLS to increase the target for Pakistan too as India did not lose too many wickets. The rain breaks did not help India as it came at intervals to stall their momentum. The two Indian openers set the platform for them with a 136-run stand. Both Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma missed out on their tons. Virat Kohli anchored the innings and it was his 93-run stand with Yuvraj that gave India the par score that they have.Superb power hitting in the death overs from Yuvraj, Kohli and Pandya get India to 319/3 off 48 overs at Edgbaston #INDvPAK #CT17 pic.twitter.com/Jxc5gKhCnq- ICC (@ICC) June 4, 201720.00 IST: Imad to Kohli, FOUR! If you don’t have tickets for the big match, watch it at our Birmingham Fan Park! #INDvPAK #CT17 pic.twitter.com/iJ84pOy8uS- ICC (@ICC) June 4, 2017It’s a final before the final as arch-rivals India and Pakistan start their ICC Champions Trophy campaign in Birmingham today. However, the security in Birmingham has been beefed up following twin terror attacks in London on Saturday night that killed several people.Birmingham has been put on red alert and the team hotel where India are staying was in a complete lock-down following the attacks. No visitors and no cars were allowed into the Hyatt Regency hotel in Birmingham.Militants drove a van at high speed into pedestrians on London Bridge before stabbing Saturday night revellers on the street and in nearby bars, killing at least six people and wounding more than 30.Millions of supporters are expected to tune in and watch the teams fight for national pride at Edgbaston.Due to diplomatic tensions between India and Pakistan, the two teams rarely lock horns against each other barring an International Cricket Council (ICC) event, and the hotly fought battle has over the years drawn a wide range of audience. For almost 18 years, wars stood in between the two outfits playing each other in a bilateral series until the ice was broken in 1978, but even today matches are few and far between. (India powerful team but can’t take things for granted: Ganguly)The two sides have not played a bilateral series since 2012-2013, and India have refused to juggle with the idea without an end to “cross border terrorism”, which essentially means militant incursions along the disputed Kashmir border. Not only will a victory for either side mean taking a huge step towards the semi-finals in a four-team group which also has Sri Lanka and South Africa, it will also be a diplomatic point-scoring in terms of the stand-off between the two parties. (Kohli not taking Pakistan lightly)On the pitch, India would go into the tie as favourites, as former Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi has also said — not only because of their emphatic 45 and 240 -run wins in the two warm-up games, but because the opposition doesn’t smell the same anymore.Pakistan just made it to the Champions Trophy as the eighth and final nation ahead of the West Indies, who missed the bus.Newly-appointed skipper Sarfraz Ahmed will face his stiffest test yet, leading an unfancied Pakistan who have to overcome serious batting deficiencies to be competitive following their struggles in the one-day format in recent years. (No Junaid Khan in Pakistan playing XI)Missing the services of explosive opener Sharjeel Khan, who is currently facing a tribunal for spot-fixing and could face a life ban if found guilty, and Umar Akmal, booted out of the squad and sent home for failing two fitness tests; Pakistan will depend heavily on veteran Shoaib Malik and all-rounder Imad Wasim. For India, it remains to be seen whether seasoned campaigner Yuvraj Singh, who has just recovered from viral fever, is pencilled in the playing XI.Kohli can depend on his bowling to fire, as the likes of fit-again Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah look in great shape.last_img
