Mira Robotics just unveiled a device that might slightly improve this chore: A housekeeping robot that can fold clothes with painfully slow movements. On Thursday, the Japan-based AI company unveiled ugo, a machine that tackles laundry duties with remote control assistance, The Japan Times reported. This bot, which can pick up, fold, and place garments on a drying rack, is designed to make household help more budget-friendly, private, and efficient for customers.Developed in February 2018, the two-armed robot weighs approximately 158 pounds and its height is adjustable from 110 centimeters to 180 centimeters. Plus, its arms are roughly 60 centimeters long to help it fold apparel, and complete other laundry-related tasks, including removing clothes from washers and placing them on drying racks.Even with all these potential benefits, this robot isn’t the fastest machine: As shown in the video above, it’s moving at the pace of a snail to take a shirt out of a basket and place it on a drying rack. Even though the bot completes the task efficiently, it takes almost a minute to finish both steps.Ken Matsui, Mira Robotics’ CEO, told The Japan Times that it plans to alter the robot’s arms and speed up the remote control process to improve ugo’s process. Right now, trained operators have to control the robot to make sure it can pick up, dry, and fold laundry without tech hiccups. The company aims to engage in closed beta testing in August 2019 and launch the ugo service in May 2020. Until then, it will tweak the robot’s performance so it can be a better housekeeping assistant for customers in the near future.More on Little Robot Blasts the Bacteria in Your Hotel Room BedEngineers Build a Self-Aware Robot That Operates on Its OwnThis MIT Robot Learned to Play Jenga Through Vision and Touch Stay on targetlast_img
