Dabbundo: SU’s bubble, football plan challenges reality of NCAA amateurism

Syracuse football players sat out four separate practices, and multiple Power 5 conferences postponed their fall seasons.Since then, though, many of the Orange’s players’ concerns about playing football in 2020 have faded as the season-opener against North Carolina on Sept. 12 nears. But that comfort shouldn’t take away from the underlying truths: The NCAA has already canceled fall championships and multiple conferences have canceled fall football. The ACC’s risk of sending athletes up and down the eastern seaboard is extraordinary. Money, not safety, is still driving the decision-making.  John Wildhack said on Tuesday that Syracuse still plans to compete in sports this fall. That means Syracuse football players — who have largely been separated from groups outside of themselves and not exposed to the coronavirus in at least six weeks — will take an airplane to Chapel Hill, North Carolina to play football against the Tar Heels on Sept. 12. They’ll abandon their bubble for another one that just popped. UNC has already closed its campus and went fully online because of a large coronavirus outbreak — recently reporting a 31.3% positivity rate among tests that had been completed. Head coach Mack Brown suggested that the campus closure is a competitive advantage and a “better seal around our program,” showing where the balance truly lies in the “student-athlete” term that the NCAA has used for decades.AdvertisementThis is placeholder textThe ACC isn’t MLB. Its athletes aren’t professionals. And SU can’t reasonably leave its own bubble while still claiming to fly under the flag of amateurism. High-level college football has long exploited athletes who receive zero financial compensation from their schools while bringing in millions of revenue dollars each year. Now that the schools and athletic departments are facing cutbacks on teams, scholarships and staff, college football is facing a potential revenue disaster if there’s no 2020 season. No fans are bad enough. No TV revenue could be armageddon. So now, under the failing facade of amateurism and supposedly putting athletes’ safety and health first, multiple Power 5 conferences, including the ACC, are going to try to play football this year. For Syracuse, that starts in Chapel Hill. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo still has North Carolina on the mandatory 14-day quarantine list for any person returning to New York. Syracuse University has mandated that students sign a “Stay Safe Pledge” and not leave the central New York region, yet athletes have been exempted from this part of the pledge. If an ordinary SU student took that trip to North Carolina, they could face disciplinary action or suspension. For SU athletes, they’re on official school business. “University sanctioned travel will include added safety precautions to protect the health and well-being of our students, as well as our broader community when they return to campus,” Vice President and Chief Communications Officer Jeff Stoecker said in a statement to The Daily Orange on July 15. “We expect that any student who travels away from campus will respect and uphold the spirit of the pledge.”As much as Syracuse head coach Dino Babers likes to call Syracuse’s traveling contingent on a “contained bubble,” that’s not actually possible. Wildhack said on Tuesday that the ACC hasn’t yet finalized a COVID-19 testing protocol outlining how many times per week athletes will be tested and how close to athletic competitions these tests will occur. Syracuse athletes are currently being tested weekly, and that will rise to three times weekly starting Sept. 7. There’s inherent risk in taking an entire football team plus essential staff down to a COVID-19 hotspot, and the Orange will make four trips in 2020 to states currently on New York travel advisory.Syracuse football players sat out four training camp practices over testing concerns at the university and across the ACC. Courtesy of SU AthleticsSU Athletics and more importantly, its athletes and staff should be commended for developing and following safety protocols that have kept coronavirus cases so low among athletes. As multiple schools around the country had to cancel workouts due to COVID-19 clusters, Syracuse kept its numbers down, as we finally learned when Wildhack released the testing numbers on Aug. 14. Five positive total tests, zero active cases and more than 1,750 tests completed. It shouldn’t have taken that long to release data, and more transparency from SU Athletics could’ve gone a long way toward improving the chances of college football this fall. No one asked for specific names, but the school owes it to the community — and other colleges nationwide — to inform them of how safe or unsafe the operation is. In June, Wildhack called the number of positive tests a “news item” and said that Syracuse would not be releasing any information about positive test results. For all of June, all of July and half of August, Babers praised SU’s protocols and his players and said they’d “be in the final four” of top schools on testing. “They don’t have to give out their numbers,” Babers said of SU on Aug. 10. “I’m falling in line with the rules of Syracuse University being a private university and not having to spit those numbers out.”When Wildhack was asked Tuesday why SU Athletics changed course and released the numbers on Aug. 14, he cited coordination with the university-wide COVID-19 dashboard, which launched a week prior to the release of SU Athletics’ testing numbers. Coincidentally, Wildhack decided to release the numbers one day after SU football players sat out practice after a miscommunication in testing protocols and ESPN’s morning show “Get Up” ran a segment where popular commentators Mike Greenberg and Paul Finebaum criticized the school for its handling of testing of athletes. Syracuse quarterback Tommy DeVito said on Tuesday that he’d like to see schools release the results of their testing protocols. He’s not asking for names. No one is. But the number of positives is important. “But to have schools come out and say, ‘Alright, this was this week, there were zero postives and this many negatives,’ I think that would be good,” DeVito said.  College athletics, football in particular, has long exploited players for profit. The argument of doing ‘what’s best for players’ conveniently leaves out that the players are getting a pretty raw deal — forced to comply with NCAA rules while not profiting a dime — compared to university executives, trustees, and decision-makers.Some decision-makers have been more honest about the situation facing schools. When Iowa State Athletic Director Jamie Pollard addressed fans in a letter in July, he didn’t mince words or mislead. His honesty was refreshing in a time when colleges continue to try to hold off the inevitable tsunami of college athlete empowerment and incoming name, image and likeness rights for players.“Some people have incorrectly framed the issue as safety versus revenue generation,” Pollard wrote. “The simple fact is that reality lies somewhere in the middle.”If schools want to try to play college football this fall, they can. Manitoba Hydro board resigns prompting accusations from premier talk of lawsuit

first_imgWINNIPEG – The board of directors at Manitoba Hydro resigned en masse Wednesday, leading to counter-accusations from Premier Brian Pallister and the spectre of a lawsuit from the Manitoba Metis Federation.Nine of 10 board members at the provincial Crown corporation issued a written statement in which they cited an inability to work with Pallister and his Progressive Conservative government. The only remaining board member is Tory backbencher Cliff Graydon.“For over a year we have attempted to meet with the premier to resolve a number of critical issues related to the finances and governance of Manitoba Hydro, including matters related to Hydro’s efforts to further develop its relationship with Indigenous peoples,” the statement read.“Despite repeated attempts, we have not been able to have a meaningful dialogue with the government and we have reached an impasse. We have been informed the government intends to remove the chair and has therefore lost confidence in the board. Accordingly we have determined that it is necessary to resign.”Pallister, however, said the resignations stem from a dispute over a plan by Hydro to pay $70 million to the Manitoba Metis Federation so the organization won’t pursue concerns over a new transmission line to Minnesota.“I would describe it more as persuasion money,” Pallister said Wednesday. “To not push for extended environmental hearings on that line and also for acquiescence or non-participation in future such proposals that Hydro might make.”Pallister said when the government discovered the planned payment, it immediately objected.Federation president David Chartrand accused Pallister of using “race card” tactics and said he insulted the entire Metis Nation for implying they could be “bought off.”He said there was a negotiated agreement with the Hydro board for $67 million, paid out over 50 years, to offset the effects of Hydro’s Bipolle III project and the new transmission line on traditional Metis territory.“It is an outright lie and (Pallister) is just trying to mislead his own party and mislead Manitobans with that action. That’s not what this issue is about,” Chartrand said. “This issue is about his arrogance and that he would not give the time of day to the biggest Crown corporation.”Chartrand said he has instructed lawyers to move to litigation.Manitoba Hydro is racking up billions of dollars in debt to build new generating stations and transmission lines, and is asking regulators to approve annual rate increases of up to 7.9 per cent for the next several years.The Progressive Conservatives opposed the plan while in Opposition, but said after winning the 2016 election that it was too late to reverse the construction projects.The Tories replaced the Hydro board less than two years ago with the nine members who are now resigning.Pallister said he had spoken with board members but avoided meetings because he did not want to seem to be interfering in Hydro’s regulatory applications to the Public Utilities Board.Opposition NDP Leader Wab Kinew said it’s a “desperate attempt” for Pallister to blame everyone but himself, while Manitoba Liberal Leader Dougald Lamont called the dispute a “full-blown crisis” and an indictment of Pallister’s leadership.Loren Remillard, CEO of the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce, said the province needs to move quickly to appoint a new board to send a message of stability that “the core business is still responsible, sustainable, well-managed.”Pallister said a new Hydro board will be appointed soon.— with files from Kelly Geraldine Malonelast_img read more

Vacant office parks find new life as schools colleges

first_imgFAIRFIELD, Conn. – On the new satellite campus of Sacred Heart University, the helicopter landing pad remains as one of the few reminders that the wooded, 69-acre property served until recently as the global headquarters for General Electric.Where Jack Welch sat at the pinnacle of corporate America, professors now lead classes inside the sleek, 1970s buildings on the campus purchased by the university following GE’s departure for Boston in 2016.Across the country, office parks that have lost their lustre with employers are being repurposed as school buildings. Colleges and school districts willing to think beyond traditional school settings are retrofitting office space to help them deal with growing enrollments and a scarcity of land in urban and suburban areas.Sacred Heart computer science professor Bob McCloud said he likes the natural light the floor-to-ceiling windows bring into the classrooms. And the leftover cubicles outside his office leave plenty of room for his graduate students. But he is still adjusting to the former GE site.“It’s a little corporate,” he said.A 28-bedroom guesthouse with a ballroom has been kept by the university to support a new hospitality program. Renovations are still underway at the two main buildings, but the university already has moved the education, computer science and engineering departments to what it is calling its West Campus, a short shuttle ride from the main campus.Michael Kinney, a university administrator, said the $31.5 million paid for the property was a bargain when compared with the cost of new construction.A similar idea has been under consideration a few miles down the Connecticut shoreline in Stamford, where the school district was looking at an unoccupied building that once housed Xerox as the potential site of an elementary school.Some other examples:ATLANTAWhen Atlanta Public Schools decided to build a high school inside a 11-story office tower that once housed IBM, designers found classrooms fit well within the column structure. But there was plenty that needed changing.A nine-story building on the 56-acre property was torn down to make room for a gymnasium and auditorium. Stairs were installed to create double-level common areas for each grade level and reduce logjams on the elevators. And laminated glass was installed in all the floor-to-ceiling windows to keep students from falling through if any were to crash into them while roughhousing.IBM’s kitchen and cafeteria were kept in place — with some modifications.“You can’t have chandeliers in a kids’ cafeteria,” said Bob Just, an architect with the firm Cooper Carry in Atlanta.North Atlanta High School opened in the new space in 2013. IBM once employed over 5,000 people at the site but that had number had dwindled to less than a thousand as more were working at home or customer sites.ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIAWith a fast-growing student population, and little available land, the city of Alexandria saw opportunity in a cheap, vacant office tower that had once housed the National Diabetes Association headquarters.In September, the building reopened as the Ferdinand T. Day Elementary School, named for a civil rights advocate who worked for desegregation in Alexandria.The school district bought a parking garage adjacent to the building for playground space, including a basketball court on the roof. A footbridge was built to allow children to walk from the third floor of the school to the building with play areas.The bottom four floors make up the school, with the top two reserved for school office space. With large windows that let in abundant natural light, school district spokeswoman Helen Lloyd said the building lent itself well to a school setting, and the retrofit took much less time than it would have to build a new school.“We went to the planning council in September, and 11 months later the building opened, all glossy and gorgeous,” Lloyd said.HOUSTONAs the Awty International School was looking for room to expand its early learning centre, the Houston neighbourhood was seeing business parks give way to more condos, apartments and retail development.When an office park across the street became available for sale, the private school in the city centre bought the five-acre property. It opened in September 2017 as a campus for preschool through first grade students. A playground replaced a parking lot in an interior courtyard, and the ceiling was raised in one building to accommodate a gym.The 30-year-old development had been home to businesses including a bicycle maker and a tax office before being sold. Union calls strike by security staff at Berlin airports

The Partnership has signed a project labour agreement that includes unions from the BC Building Trades. Hydro says the agreement will prioritize hiring local and Indigenous workers, with a goal of having up to 25 percent of the GSS workforce being made up of apprentices.According to BC Hydro, the contractor will mobilize to the site this spring, with the work taking place over a five-year period. The Crown Corporation estimates there will be approximately 1,600 people working on this portion of the project at the peak of construction in 2021.In addition to the generating station and spillways civil works contract, BC Hydro has awarded two other Site C contracts. Nanaimo-based F&M Installations Ltd. was awarded the $33-million contract to build the Site C substation, while REEL COH Inc. was awarded the contract to design, build and commission the dam’s powerhouse bridge and gantry cranes for $23 million. JOHN, B.C. — BC Hydro announced this morning that it has awarded the contract for the Site C dam’s generating station and spillways civil works, along with two other project contracts.BC Hydro signed the generating station and spillways civil works contract with the Aecon-Flatiron-Dragados-EBC Partnership. The contract is valued at $1.6 billion and falls within the project’s revised budget of $10.7 billion.The contract for Site C’s generating station and spillways is the second-largest of the project’s contracts. 208 FIRs DD entries registered till date

first_imgNEW DELHI: As many as 208 FIRs and daily diary (DD) entries have been registered till date against various political parties and others for violation of the model code of conduct in the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections, the poll body in Delhi said on Monday.The statistics surveillance team of the Delhi’s chief electoral officer’s (CEO) office constituted to keep an eye on the expenses of political parties, has seized Rs 3,48,86,850/crore in cash and also seized 1411.1264 kg of narcotics and drugs. “A total of 208 FIRs or DD entries have been lodged till date in connection with the violation of the model code of conduct,” Delhi CEO Ranbir Singh told reporters. Defamation complaint filed against Kejriwal
