Uber integrates London public transport into app

first_imgEver since London’s public transport regulator, Transport for London, suspended Uber’s license to operate in September 2017, the company has been working hard to get back in its good graces. Uber’s probationary license was restored in June 2018, in part because of its willingness to show it’s open to working with the city more closely. Uber is on the charm offensive in London. Casey Gutteridge/Uber Uber has integrated real-time info from London’s public transport network into its app, the ride-hailing company said Tuesday. The decision to help people navigate the city using a variety of public transit options is part of Uber’s mission to reduce reliance on car ownership, the company said. It puts the Uber app in direct competition with apps such as Google Maps and Citymapper.”With 3.5 million Londoners relying on Uber, we recognize the important responsibilities that come with being a good partner to this great global city,” Uber’s head of transit, David Reich, said in a statement. “We share many of the same goals as the cities that we serve and are committed to addressing the same challenges: reducing individual car ownership, expanding transportation access and tackling air pollution.” Post a comment Tags 0 Had the chance to try our new Public Transport option, launching today in #London with live bus and tube times from @TfL in the @Uber app. All part of our goal to help people replace their car with their phone. Pixel 3 phones arent selling and its probably Verizons fault

first_img Comments 99+ Google says it’s sold fewer Pixel phones year over year due to fierce smartphone competition on the high end, but that probably isn’t the entire story. There’s a good chance that the company’s agreement to make Verizon the Pixel’s exclusive US carrier plays a role. On Monday, Ruth Porat, CFO of Google’s parent company Alphabet, explained declining Pixel sales as due in part to “heavy promotional activity industry-wide” and “recent pressures in the premium smartphone market.” Even with deep discounts, people just aren’t buying Pixel phones, despite best-in-class camera performance and glowing recommendations from CNET and other outlets. The Pixel 3 was CNET’s top Android phone of 2018. So why haven’t buyers been snapping it up like hotcakes?  Review • Our Google Pixel review: Pure Android at its absolute best Now playing: Watch this: CNET may get a commission from retail offers. There might be a few reasons for this. First, times are tough across the board. The smartphone market has been slowing down. Apple just announced that it sold fewer iPhones than it did a year ago. People are keeping their phones longer between upgrades, and prices are skyrocketing year over year. New phones are entering the market, like T-Mobile’s “premium affordable” OnePlus 6T, and buyers may be holding their collective breath to see how foldable phones and 5G networks pan out in 2019. (Hint: not too great so far.)But for the Pixel phones in particular, Verizon’s exclusive backing might be almost as much of a hindrance in getting the word out as it is a benefit. Verizon is the US’ largest carrier, which gives the Pixel the advantage of being discovered when buyers walk into a shop or peruse the carrier’s website.  Share your voice 33 Photos Originally published May 1 at 4 a.m. PT. In fact, you can buy the Pixel 3 phones through Google’s online store for use with any US carrier, as well as Google’s own hybrid Fi network. Limiting carrier exposure surely doesn’t help get the word out, and you would think that Google would have as much clout as Apple and Samsung in getting its phones on any wireless provider it chooses.Google’s mostly-direct-to-consumer-except-for-Verizon sales model clearly isn’t working, and I’m not surprised. The vast majority of people — we’re talking about well into 90% — buy their handset from a carrier, not from a phone-maker, even one with as much pull as Google. If your carrier doesn’t have a particular phone, why not just get another pretty good alternative instead? The Pixel 3’s camera is so, so good. Angela Lang/CNET The rumored Google Pixel 3A is said to come to T-Mobile as well as Verizon, which, if true, will put the Pixel in front of more buyers. (T-Mobile is also trying to mute Verizon’s thunder with its #GetOutofTheRed campaign.) Exiting an exclusivity contract with AT&T on the very first iPhone helped Apple create the boom that made its smartphone one of the most iconic, sought-after phones in the world. Google can only hope that expanding into T-Mobile would do the same. For Google’s sake, I hope the Pixel’s rumored carrier parade won’t stop there.Verizon said, “We don’t comment on future contracts nor would we comment on sales.” Google did not comment. 5:52 Preview • Pixel and Pixel XL unveiled: Google’s post-Nexus phones come out swinging (hands-on) Tags Phones Android Pie Android 10 (Android Q) Google T-Mobile Verizonlast_img read more

Uber tells passengers to stop dooring bicyclists

first_img 5 Tags Comments Share your voice Enlarge ImageUber is piloting a feature that will tell passengers if they’re being dropped off near a bike lane. Uber Uber aims to school passengers on how to avoid “dooring” bicyclists.Getting “doored” has long been a fear-inducing issue for cyclists. It’s when a passenger or driver opens a car door in the path of a bike rider, causing the cyclist to crash. What can result is anything from bruises to broken bones and head injuries.Dooring accidents might be on the rise now that ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft are increasingly picking up and dropping off passengers on busy city streets. Uber announced a pilot program on Wednesday aimed at increasing safety around drivers, passengers and cyclists. In select cities, it’s now including an in-app feature that tells passengers via push notification if they’re being dropped off on a street with a bike lane and to look out for cyclists. The company is also reminding drivers it’s illegal to stop in a bike lane in most cities.Lyft rolled out a similar program around preventing dooring last month.Uber and Lyft are also encouraging riders to get in the habit of doing the “Dutch Reach.” This is a technique where passengers and drivers look over their shoulder before exiting a vehicle to make sure no one is there. “As the experts say, increasing awareness of safe behavior increases safety,” Kristin Smith, Uber’s road safety product marketing manager, wrote in a blog post. “As a daily bike commuter and bike safety advocate, I know firsthand the challenges of urban bike commuting.”A quick Google search brings up dozens of legal forums with people asking questions about what to do after being doored by Uber passengers. A lawsuit was filed in Boston against an Uber driver and passenger that accidentally doored a cyclist in 2015, according to ABC. The passenger said he didn’t know he was being dropped off on a street with a bike lane. Uber reportedly said it’s insurance won’t cover the lawsuit in the case of the passenger. An Uber spokeswoman said the company’s new safety initiatives around dooring aren’t because of any lawsuits.Uber’s pilot officially starts in San Francisco, Washington, DC, New York City and Toronto as of Wednesday. Former Tata executives dismiss Cyrus Mistrys claims

first_imgCyrus Mistry issued a retraction after his damning allegation on Wednesday suggesting that Ratan Tata tried to sell IT services company Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to IBM was refuted by TCS’ founding CEO FC Kohli. The counter attack by senior Tata honchos is the latest in the “letter war” between Mistry and Ratan Tata ever since Mistry was ousted from the chairman’s position on October 24. The power tussle assumes more significance as Tata Sons is seeking shareholder votes to evict Mistry and Nusli Wadia as directors from the boards of various companies, such as TCS, Tata Chemicals and Indian Hotels Corp, and has called an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) on December 22 for the same.”With reference to the timeline of the entire episode, I would also like to point out that my heart bypass surgery took place in 1984. Mr JRD Tata was interested in my health and progress after the surgery and he established contact with my surgeon at Houston. He also wanted to know when I would be well enough to return to India….. At no point at that time was there ever an intention of the Tata Group to sell TCS to IBM,” Kohli, the founding CEO at TCS, said in a statement. He was responding to the statement issued by Mistry’s office on Tuesday that said that the proposal to sell TCS to IBM was “near death” experience for India’s biggest IT software services exporter and also the country’s most-valued company by market capitalisation.Mistry’s office did not contest Kohli’s statement. “Mr Mistry has the greatest respect for Mr Kohli and does not wish to join issue with him on the statement that he has made. Mr Mistry agrees with him that there was no intention of the Tata Group selling TCS to IBM or to any other company,” it said, adding, “The statement Mr Mistry made was based on information from sources who were close to JRD Tata who informed him that it was Ratan Tata’s intention, and not the group’s intention, to sell TCS.”B Muthuraman, former vice chairman and managing director of Tata Steel, also challenged Mistry other the allegation that the Tata group paid a high acquisition of $12 billion for Corus due to Ratan Tata’s “ego.” He called the statement “speculative and biased”.Muthuraman said the purchase of Corus turned out to be a costly affair for the company because of the “sudden and unprecedented scale of the global financial crisis in 2008″.”The long-term strategy of Tata Steel was well thought out after a lot of deliberation to grow the company through capacity expansion in India and internationally through inorganic growth… Following the successful acquisition of NatSteel in Singapore and Millennium Steel in Thailand, Corus Group plc provided a natural fit for the portfolio especially since the Netherlands facilities which is the gold standard in competitive positioning were part of the asset perimeter,” Muthuraman said, according to the Economic Times. The Cyrus Mistry-Ratan Tata row has led to many unsavoury developments at the $125 billion Tata Group, including high-profile exits and defamation suits. Nusli Wadia, whose ouster from many Tata Group companies seems imminent, has threatened to sue the Tata Group for “false” and “defamatory” allegations made against him.last_img read more
