It gave room to a move that showed ignorance, lacking values and education. I didn’t even want to discuss this, but you in the media are giving a spotlight to these stupid and ignorant people,” replied Conte.“Those are not fans, they are ignorant. I gave a message to the fans 10 days ago. We are fortunate to be involved in the best sport in the world and must set the example, pass on positive values and be enthusiastic about playing football. This is sport, not war. Sometimes people forget that.“It is a sport that should reflect positive human values, not hate and violence. If that’s not the case, then I am the first to walk away. Nobody makes me work as a Coach.“It’s increasingly difficult, because society nowadays highlights hatred and violence. I’ve honestly struggled since I came back to Italy from England. I see situations and wonder why I am even doing this.“As long as my passion for this sport surpasses these issues, then I will continue. If my passion drops, I will be the first to say it’s time to call it quits. It won’t be a big loss for football, but it won’t be a loss for me either.” last_img read more

In cinema, my relationships, like my one with [director Carlo] Verdone, last a long time.“I’m all for the exclusives, when you want everything right away but get it all wrong.“Insigne’s an excellent sportsman, but he must stay calm, change his attitude and lay off certain things.“He’s always had an attitude of discomfort in Naples. I understand him, I protect him and I like him a lot, but he’s always found his situation in Naples to be uncomfortable.“Therefore, I just want to say that he needs to calm down and become a more peaceful person, but that’s his problem. Neither Raiola nor Ancelotti can resolve that.“He’s a great player and he can be in good form or bad form. If he’s less so, it’s up to the Coach not to play him.“Insigne can’t come out cracking jokes or with an ‘almost’ defiant attitude. ‘Eden as striker better for Blues’

first_imgPlaying Eden Hazard as a striker provides Chelsea with greater balance defensively, according to Maurizio Sarri.Belgium international Hazard has frequently played through the middle this season with Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud struggling for form. The 28-year-old was deployed in the centre of the attack for the 2-1 victory over Newcastle United on Saturday and he set up Willian for the winning goal after Ciaran Clark cancelled out Pedro’s opener. Article continues below Editors’ Picks ‘There is no creativity’ – Can Solskjaer get Man Utd scoring freely again? ‘Everyone legged it on to the pitch!’ – How Foden went from Man City superfan to future superstar Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? Asked if Hazard enjoyed operating as a striker, Sarri said: “Not in the first half. In the second half my feeling was that he enjoyed it.”I wanted to see the solution with three small players. I think in this moment it is a very good solution because we are not less dangerous in the offensive phase and then in the defensive phase we are more balanced.”In the last six matches, we conceded only three goals and one was from a penalty. I think that at the moment, in the defensive phase, we are doing very well. One of the reasons I think, in my opinion, is that Eden is playing in that position.”Sarri acknowledged that having Hazard leading the line makes it difficult for Chelsea to penetrate the box, an area he pointed to as requiring improvement.”For his characteristics, of course, he goes in the direction of the ball. We need to learn to attack spaces, or attack the box with the other players,” he said.”It was better [against Newcastle] with the other wingers in attacking spaces. We scored after 10 minutes by attacking spaces behind the lines with Pedro. I remember very well at the beginning of the second half, we had the same situation with Willian.”So it is better now. We need to improve in attacking the box. When the ball is outside, it is impossible for Eden to stay in the box.” Check out Goal’s Premier League 2019-20 fantasy football podcast for game tips, debate and rivalries.last_img read more

The spread suggests that the Hawkeyes are favorites to win the contest.Spread: Iowa -12Game Time: 12:00 p.m. ETChannel: ESPN2Iowa vs. Purdue preview:The Purdue offense is bad, but the defense is worse; the Boilermakers have given up 715 yards on the ground in the last two games. Despite giving up 499 total yards to Illinois last week, the Boilermakers enter this match-up with a win and will look to get back-to-back wins for the first time this season. QB David Blough has thrown nine interceptions this year, but he has to protect the football if this team want a shot at winning this game. The Hawkeyes enter this game fresh off of a 14-7 win over Minnesota. After winning their first two games, they’ve alternated between wins and losses, and will be looking to find some rhythm and consistency offensively against a punching bag of an opponent. In this case though, it doesn’t matter much, the Boilermakers’ defense will let Akrum Wadley and LeShun Daniels run all over them.Iowa vs. Purdue prediction:Iowa finally wins one with ease after several very close games. Messi suffers calf injury on return to Barcelona training

first_imgLionel Messi is set to miss Barcelona’s upcoming trip to the USA after suffering a calf injury during his first training session back at the club.Having been given extended leave following Argentina’s run to the semi-finals at this summer’s Copa America, Messi only returned to the fold on Monday. However, he was forced to pull out of the session with what doctors have diagnosed as a grade one calf strain. Article continues below Editors’ Picks Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? Ox-rated! Dream night in Genk for Liverpool ace after injury nightmare Messi a man for all Champions League seasons – but will this really be Barcelona’s? August has not been an easy month for Messi so far. Last week, it was announced that he would face a three-month suspension from international football plus a heavy fine after his controversial comments about perceived favouritism towards Brazil at the Copa America .He joined back up with his club team-mates over the weekend and watched from the bench as they came from behind to beat Arsenal in what was the Gunners’ final game of pre-season.Initially trailing to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s superb strike, Barca levelled thanks to a comical mix-up between Bernd Leno and Ainsley Maitland-Niles before Luis Suarez won it at the death.Messi may have been hoping to feature in one of their upcoming fixtures in the USA but is now facing a nervous wait to see when he will be available with the new La Liga season less than two weeks away.Barca face Napoli twice in the USA, with fixtures in Miami and Michigan, before starting the new campaign with a trip to Athletic Club on August 16.Manager Ernesto Valverde has at least been boosted by the return to training of the other members of his squad to have played at the Copa America.Arturo Vidal and Philippe Coutinho are back in the picture and are included in the travelling squad, as well as new signing Junior Firpo. The 22-year-old left-back signed on a five-year deal from Real Betis for a fee of €18 million (£16.3m/$20m). Taking on the number 24 shirt, he will provide much-needed competition for veteran left-back Jordi Alba.Four Barcelona B players who have been in among the first-team squad during pre-season will also travel to the USA. Inaki Pena, Riqui Puig, Carles Perez and Abel Ruiz will all be hoping to impress Valverde and get some minutes under their belt against Napoli.last_img read more

Pellegrini accuses Man City of tactical fouls

first_imgManuel Pellegrini accused Manchester City of tactical fouls in the Premier League champions’ 5-0 thrashing of West Ham on Saturday.Pep Guardiola’s side started their title defence with an emphatic victory at London Stadium courtesy of goals from Gabriel Jesus, Sergio Aguero and a Raheem Sterling hat-trick.Hammers manager Pellegrini felt his players were too “innocent”, especially in the first half, as they conceded too many simple free-kicks when in promising positions. “Every time we tried to arrive in their box they committed fouls. We were innocent in that regard,” he said.”If you review the game, that is why we didn’t create too many chances in the first half. All our offensive moments of attacking ended in a foul. You can look at the statistics. They committed 13 fouls, we committed five. But that wasn’t the reason why we lost.”According to Opta data, West Ham conceded six free-kicks to City’s 13, but the visitors led 8-1 in terms of fouls committed by half-time.Kyle Walker and Sterling were the only City players booked, with Mike Dean handing out those cautions in the 87th minute and three minutes into second-half stoppage time.It is not the first time City have been accused of such a tactic. Last November, former Manchester United captain Gary Neville said Fernandinho in particular was happy to foul to stop counter-attacks, prompting Guardiola to respond: “Never have my teams been focused on doing something wrong against the opponents.”Guardiola was riled again in April when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer suggested City would be happy to give away free-kicks to halt United in their tracks in the derby. “I never prepare a game in 10 seasons as a manager thinking about this kind of thing. Never,” he said.Pellegrini felt City’s approach to stopping West Ham attacks was one of the main differences in a balanced first half, but he insisted he did not think it the only reason for his side’s humbling defeat. When asked if he might encourage his players to adopt the same tactic, he said: “We must be more intelligent though to know when to make [fouls], not use it as a system.”If you review the game, we didn’t create too many chances because many of our attacking chances were stopped by a foul.”But I repeat, I don’t think that is just the reason we lost 5-0.” Check out Goal’s Premier League 2019-20 fantasy football podcast for game tips, debate and rivalries.last_img read more

A College Football Team Used A Fake QB In Warmups On Saturday

first_imgMan carries footballs.Mandatory Credit: Rick Stewart /AllsportCollege football teams will stop at nothing to get an edge. That includes coaches concealing or downplaying injuries to the public. In the case of Hawaii, it means really concealing an injury to your starting quarterback. The Rainbow Warriors won Saturday’s game against Wyoming without the services of star signal caller Cole McDonald.McDonald missed two days of practice last week and then didn’t play in the game with an unspecified injury, but Hawaii went through great lengths to keep the Cowboys on their toes. They enlisted an impostor to wear his jersey during pregame warmups.Yes, that’s right. There was someone wearing No. 13 on the field before the game, but it wasn’t McDonald. So is it safe to say that we’ve been bamboozled by a non-dread locked version of Cole McDonald? #HawaiiFB LOL pic.twitter.com/iPY0ExMDc7— Chavonnie (@chavramz) October 7, 2018Hawaii starting QB Cole McDonald’s injury was kept a secret up until kickoff, and even went as far as having a backup wear his jersey during pre-game warm-ups: (h/t /u/Jah-Eazy) https://t.co/bo7xZaFBir— RedditCFB (@RedditCFB) October 8, 2018Astute observers might have realized McDonald didn’t have his trademark blonde dreads hanging out of his helmet. Otherwise, that’s a pretty good effort.Even without McDonald, who entered the game leading the nation in passing yards (2,100) and passing touchdowns (24), Hawaii pulled out a 17-13 win. Freshman Chevan Cordeiro stepped in and completed 19-of-29 passes for 148 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winner with less than two minutes to play.Guess the pregame trickery paid off.last_img read more

Tim Tebow Thinks These 3 Teams Could Beat Alabama

(Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)Alabama has been one of the most-dominant teams in college football history so far this season. The Crimson Tide have looked unbeatable for much of the year.Is that actually the case, though? Is Alabama, barring an injury to star quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, actually unbeatable?Tim Tebow says no.The ESPN college football analyst appeared on SportsCenter this morning and listed three teams that have a chance of really challenging Alabama. Those three teams:ClemsonGeorgiaOhio StateGeorgia is obviously extremely familiar with Alabama, while Dabo Swinney and Urban Meyer know exactly what it takes to topple Nick Saban on a big stage.“One (team) is Georgia here in the SEC Championship. Kirby Smart knows how to game plan and we saw that last national championship. And also Clemson. With that defensive line if they’re able to face off in the Playoff, I think they can give them a game,” Tebow said.“But one team to watch out for – if Ohio State can make a run – Urban Meyer also give Nick Saban fits. That offense with Dwayne Haskins, that could be another big-time matchup for Alabama in the future.”No one is challenging Alabama today, though. The Crimson Tide are set to kick off against The Citadel at noon E.T.last_img read more

Athlon Sports Names Adrian Martinez No. 1 Breakout QB For 2019

first_img Martinez had a solid debut for the Cornhuskers last year, but we think the sophomore goes from good to great and contends for a spot among the top 10 quarterbacks in college football this season. As a true freshman last fall, Martinez helped Nebraska finish 4-2 in its last six games and finished the year with 2,617 yards and 17 passing scores to eight picks. The California native completed a healthy percent (64.6) of his attempts, ranked second on the team with 629 rushing yards and eight scores and tied for third among Big Ten quarterbacks with 18 completions of 30 or more yards. Martinez will also benefit from a full offseason to develop under coach Scott Frost and is a big reason why Nebraska will contend for the Big Ten West Division title this year.If you believe in Adrian Martinez and Frost’s coaching ability, you have to think Nebraska can win the Big Ten West. It won’t be easy though. The Huskers will have to fend off Iowa, Wisconsin and others to do so. In fact, a case could be made for any of those three teams–plus Northwestern and Minnesota and maybe even Purdue-to emerge as the division champ.Nebraska will open its 2019 season against South Alabama on August 31. Adrian Martinez warms up for Nebraska.LINCOLN, NE – SEPTEMBER 15: Quarterback Adrian Martinez #2 of the Nebraska Cornhuskers warms up before the game against the Troy Trojans at Memorial Stadium on September 15, 2018 in Lincoln, Nebraska. (Photo by Steven Branscombe/Getty Images)Many pundits are expecting Nebraska to make a big jump in Year Two under Scott Frost. In order for that to happen, second-year quarterback Adrian Martinez will need to have an even bigger season than he did in 2018.Martinez was Frost’s prized recruit, pried away from Tennessee shortly after the former Nebraska legend was hired as head coach. Frost turned the reins over to the four-star prospect as a true freshman last fall, and he acquitted himself well.Athlon Sports is expecting major things from Martinez as a sophomore. The publication released its top 25 breakout quarterbacks for the 2019 season, and Martinez is in the No. 1 spot.Previously, Athlon had rated Martinez as the No. 9 overall QB in college football for this year.last_img read more

AFC Asian Cup: Yuya Osako stars as Japan beat Iran to reach final

first_img Reuters Al AinJanuary 28, 2019UPDATED: January 28, 2019 23:21 IST Yuya Osako celebrates with Japan teammates (AP Photo)HIGHLIGHTSYuya Osako scored twice as Japan beat Iran 3-0 in the Asian Cup semi-finalsIran coach Carlos Queiroz stepped down from his post after almost 8 years at the helmJapan are four times championsWerder Bremen striker Yuya Osako scored twice in 11 second-half minutes to help four-time champions Japan into the final of the Asian Cup with a 3-0 victory over tournament favourites Iran on Monday.Osako headed the first home in the 56th minute and added his second from the penalty spot to help set up a date with either hosts the United Arab Emirates or Qatar in Friday’s final in Abu Dhabi.Genki Haraguchi put a gloss to the scoreline with a powerful run and shot in stoppage time at the end of the match but the contest was already long decided.Iran had been the form team of the tournament but their dreams of a ending a 43-year wait for a fourth continental title were left in tatters by the clinical Samurai Blue.Carlos Queiroz announced in the post-match news conference that his nearly eight-year run as Iran coach, which took in two World Cups, was over.”I think the simplest thing to do is to copy the old song: ‘and now, the end is here’,” the Portuguese said, misquoting the song Frank Sinatra made famous.”I’m happy and proud to say I did it my way.”Roared on by a noisy majority of the crowd, the Iranians had enjoyed the better of a competitive, if goalless, first half but were completely deflated by Osako’s twin strikes and never looked like fighting their way back into the match.”We knew it was going to be tough but the players showed great fighting spirit,” said Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu.advertisement”I’m happy the players showed that fighting spirit and really went for the win.”While Iran might have had a case that Morteza Pouraliganji’s arm blocked Takumi Minamino’s cross accidentally for the penalty, the opening goal was down to the sort of lapse of concentration that Queiroz has warned his team against.Minamino had made a break down the left and crumpled to the floor on the edge of the area looking for a free kick or penalty.None was forthcoming but while defender Ehsan Hajsafi was asking the referee to book the striker for a dive, Minamino raced to retrieve the ball and crossed it from the corner flag for Osako to head home unchallenged.”It was very competitive, quite balanced game, until one error by my team, a naive error. We were all expecting action from the referee over the simulation,” said Queiroz.”It was an emotional breakdown from my players and after that there was only one team on the pitch.”It was the first goal Iran had conceded in six games at the tournament but winger Alireza Jahanbakhsh came close to equalising five minutes later with a free kick that forced a good save out of Shuichi Gonda. The second blow landed soon afterwards when the referee pointed to the spot after the ball had struck Pouraliganji on the arm, confirming his decision following a look at the TV pictures on the sideline.Osako sent goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand the wrong way from the spot and a fifth final in the last eight versions of the continental championship look assured, Haraguchi helping to wrap up their first win by a margin of more than one goal at the tournament. Also Watch:For sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports. Lean, mean pace machine: Virat Kohli poses with Mohammed Shami ahead of Nagpur ODI

first_img India Today Web Desk HyderabadMarch 3, 2019UPDATED: March 3, 2019 15:53 IST Virat Kohli on Mohammed Shami: Have never seen him so lean before. He has lost 5-6 kg (@iamVkohli Photo)HIGHLIGHTSMohammed Shami shone with the ball in India’s 6-wicket win over Australia on SaturdayVirat Kohli had heaped praise on Mohammed Shami after the fast bowler’s efforts in HyderabadHaving clinched a 1-0 lead, India take on Australia in the 2nd ODI in Nagpur on TuesdayIndia cricket team captain, Virat Kohli has posted a photograph of himself with fast bowler Mohammed Shami, whom he has described as “lean, mean pace machine” while posing with him at the Hyderabad airport on Sunday.Captain Kohli and his teammates left for Nagpur earlier in the day for the second ODI on Tuesday, March 5. India began the five-match ODi series against Australia with a six-wicket win in the first match in Hyderabad on Saturday.India’s win was set up by their bowling attack and the middle-order duo of MS Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav. While Mohammed Shami and Kuldeep Yadav shone with the ball, picking up two wickets each, Dhoni and Jadhav stitched an unbeaten 141-run stand for the fifth wicket to help India gun down a 237-run target with 10 balls to spare.Notably, Kohli had heaped praise on Shami after the pacer picked up the crucial wickets of well-set batsmen, Glenn Maxwell (40) and debutant Ashton Turner (21) in a span of two overs in the 1st ODI. Shami troubled the Australian batsmen with the new ball and came back to masterfully execute his old-ball skills on Saturday.Nagpur next. With the lean mean pace machine @MdShami11 pic.twitter.com/LoQP1OtKYdVirat Kohli (@imVkohli) March 3, 2019Lauding Shami’s fitness and the hunger to excel across formats, Kohli said: “The way Shami has come back into the white-ball set-up after his Test performances, have never seen him so lean before. He has lost 5-6 kg. He’s running in and bowling so well.advertisement”The lines and length he’s bowling; got Maxi on 40-odd out with a beautiful ball. He has the wicket-taking ability and he’s hungry for wickets. Heading into the WC, it’s a great sign for team India. If he can stay hungry like this and look for wickets and he has the ability to back it up with Bumrah and Kuldeep, it’s gonna be great to stand in the field and watch.”After impressing with the red ball in India’s overseas tours during the 2018-19 season, Shami made a splendid comeback to limited-overs cricket in the lead up to the World Cup. Shami had picked up five wickets in India’s 2-1 ODI series win in Australia earlier this year and topped the bowling charts for India in their ODI series victory in New Zealand with nine wickets in four matches. The Bengal fast bowler has seemingly sealed a spot in India squad for the World Cup, starting May 30 in England and Wales. Given his recent performances with both the new and the old ball, it may not be surprising if he is chosen as the second pacer ahead of Bhuvneshwar Kumar at the quadrennial showpiece event.Bhuvneshwar, who has been rested for the first three ODIs of the ongoing series vs Australia, will return to the final two ODIs.Also Read | Chris Gayle on world record in England ODIs: Fantastic to hit 39 sixes aged 39Also Read | Play and thrash Pakistan in World Cup, says Haryana sports ministerAlso Read | I don’t fear anything when MS Dhoni is around: Kedar JadhavAlso See:For sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports. No pressure, I need to feel satisfied myself first: Dipa Karmakar ahead of World Cups

first_img Next Indo-Asian News Service New DelhiMarch 11, 2019UPDATED: March 11, 2019 17:56 IST Dipa Karmakar said that for her every competition is very tough. (Reuters Photo)Ace gymnast Dipa Karmakar is set to represent India in the upcoming World Cups at Baku, Azerbaijan and Doha, Qatar. She says for her, every competition is very tough but she doesn’t feel pressurised.Ahead of the competitions that will start from March 14, Karmakar told IANS in a telephonic interview: “Training has been going well. I was training in Agartala all this while. I will try my best to do well there.”For her, all the championships are the same.”We are always on the field. Whether it is Olympics or any world championship, all are the same. For us, every competition is very tough,” said the young sports star. But she maintains that there is no pressure.”The performance of players either goes up or down. It has always been like that. For instance, I didn’t do well at the Asian Games… whatever was the reason,” she said referring to her disappointing fifth spot in the women’s balance beam final at the 18th Asian Games last year.”But I have no pressure. I have to do my best, I need to feel satisfied myself first,” added Karmakar, who bagged the gold in the women’s vault event at the Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup in Mersin in Turkey in 2018.Like her competitors from Russia and the US, her aim is to get good scores that can lift her to a podium finish.Talking about ups and downs, Dipa had to sit out for almost two years after undergoing surgery for Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury in 2017.advertisement”I wasn’t training in between… For a sports person to be outside the field… it’s very difficult,” she said. The 25-year-old hogged the limelight after her performance at the Rio Olympics in 2016. Though she narrowly missed out on the bronze in women’s vault at the international sport event, it did bring gymnastics — a sport that is not so popular in India — into focus.Among various honours, Barbie presented a one-of-a-kind doll to Karmakar. On Barbie’s 60th anniversary on March 9, the brand honoured more than 20 women, including Karmakar, across multiple countries and continents ranging from 19 to 85 years old. This is the largest and most diverse line-up of women honoured by Barbie to date and a continuation of the ‘Shero’ programme launched in 2015.”I’d like to thank them for this honour. I am very happy,” she said.Talking about her doll, she said with excitement: “I really liked it…the red costume, she is even wearing clips like mine and the medal.”Last year, a book titled “Dipa Karmakar: The Small Wonder (India’s First Ever Female Gymnast to Compete in the Olympics)” was also unveiled. What’s next – a film on her life?”That…my coach Bisweshwar Nandi Sir would know. If Sir wants that a film should be made on my life, then it will happen,” said the youngster, who took an interest in gymnastics when she was just five years old. Also Read | Indian gymnasts left in the lurch by Sports Authority of India, claims Gymnastics officialFor sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports. AB de Villiers chose money over country: Shoaib Akhtar

first_img Indo-Asian News Service LondonJune 8, 2019UPDATED: June 8, 2019 13:50 IST Shoaib Akhtar has slammed AB de Villiers.(Reuters Photo)HIGHLIGHTSAkhtar slammed De Villiers for chosing IPL and PSL despite the pressure to make himself available for CWCAkhtar also said that De Villiers should have remembered that his country needed himAB De Villiers made an offer to get out of retirement for this World CupFormer Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar has slammed AB de Villiers for “putting finances over the country” in a video that was put up on Youtube.”Firstly, people must not forget that there was pressure on AB De Villiers to leave IPL and PSL contracts and make himself available for the World Cup. However, he chose the IPL and PSL, announced an early retirement and recused himself from the World Cup,” said Akhtar in his video uploaded on Friday. It was revealed shortly after South Africa’s third defeat at the 2019 World Cup that De Villiers had made a last ditch effort to get into the Proteas squad. The former skipper had retired from international cricket in May 2018 and thus did not fulfill the criteria of selection, which was playing South African domestic cricket or international cricket in the months leading up to the tournament.”So basically everything started with finance,” said Akhtar. “I think when he took this decision, he did it looking at his finances and economics.”The timing of this revelation raises serious questions. South Africa was in poor form even when he had announced his retirement a year before the World Cup. But I think he should have remembered (at that point) that his country needs him. The money will come today or tomorrow but you the call of making money and ignore the World Cup.””I don’t mind people making money but do it in the right way. If you indeed have to make money then pick and chose correctly but keep your country as the priority.advertisement”Now to clear your name you made a last-ditch offer to come out of international retirement for this summer’s World Cup. But I think the management was correct in their stand,” said the 43-year-old.Also Read | ICC red cards MS Dhoni gloves: Mahi in breach of ICC rulesAlso Read | There are no real shock defeats in World Cup 2019: Liam Plunkett ahead of Bangladesh clashAlso SeeFor sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports. We will play for free for sake of the game: Zimbabwe cricketer

first_img Press Trust of India HarareJuly 30, 2019UPDATED: July 30, 2019 19:01 IST ICC had recently banned Zimbabwe Cricket on grounds of government interference. (Photo: Zimbabwe Cricket)HIGHLIGHTSThe ICC recently suspended Zimbabwe Cricket for violation of its constitutionZimbabwe’s cricketers are willing to play “for free” to keep the game alive in the countryICC has directed that the elected Zimbabwe Cricket Board be reinstated to the office within three monthsBarred from competing in any ICC event, Zimbabwe’s cricketers are willing to play “for free” to keep the game alive in the country, expressing their desperation to compete in the upcoming World Twenty20 Qualifiers. The ICC had recently banned Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) on grounds of government interference. The women’s T20 qualifiers are slated to be held in August while the men’s qualifiers will be held in October.”We will play for free. As long as we can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Our next assignment is the qualifiers. We will play for free,” a senior squad member told ESPNcricinfo.Neither of the two senior national squads have been paid in the last two months, and the men were not paid match fees during their recent tour of Netherlands and Ireland. The suspension, though, does not bar them from competing in bilateral series and the ICC can even appoint match officials for bilateral series they host. However, without ICC funding, it will be difficult for them to host any series.According to the FTP, Zimbabwe are to host Afghanistan in August and the West Indies in October and November before travelling to India for a three-match T20 series in January 2020.Meanwhile, the interim committee running Zimbabwe Cricket has warned its employees to report for work on Thursday or face “legal and disciplinary” consequences.Zimbabwe Cricket’s (ZC) directive is meant for all employees and primarily it is meant for ZC’s administrative and logistical staff. The captains of the men’s and women’s nationals teams recently wrote to Sports Minister Kirsty Coventry, expressing their interest to be allowed to play cricket again as soon as possible.advertisementEarlier this month, the International Cricket Council (ICC) suspended Zimbabwe Cricket for violation of the global body’s constitution, which doesn’t allow any government intervention. The elected members of Zimbabwe board were suspended by government agency Sports and Recreation Committee (SRC) which was a violation of articles 2.4 (c) and d.The ICC has directed that the elected Zimbabwe Cricket Board be reinstated to the office within three months, and progress in this respect will be considered again at the October Board meeting. Also Read | Australia eye first Ashes glory in England since 2001Also Read | It is very unfortunate: Chief selector MSK Prasad on Sunil Gavaskar’s ‘lame duck’ commentAlso See:For sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports. India Today Web Desk LondonAugust 18, 2019UPDATED: August 18, 2019 18:48 IST Steve Smith was examined on the ground by Australia team doctor Richard Shaw (AP Photo)HIGHLIGHTSSteve Smith was on 80 when he was hit on the neck by a Jofra Archer bouncer on Day 4Smith returned to the crease about 40 minutes later and was eventually dismissed for 92Marnus Labuschagne has been confirmed as Smith’s concussion replacementAustralia batsman Steve Smith has been ruled out of the remainder of the second Test due to a “delayed concussion” after the blow that he suffered on the back of his neck while batting on Day 4 of the ongoing match against England at Lord’s.Marnus Labuschagne has been confirmed as Smith’s concussion replacement. This is the first time a concussion replacement will be used by a team in Test cricket after this new rule was approved in July this year by the International Cricket Council (ICC). Smith is also the first player ever to be ruled out of a Test match due to a delayed concussion. On Saturday, a nasty bouncer from Jofra Archer, bowled at close to 90mph, hit Smith on the back of his neck just below the helmet, causing him to fall flat on the pitch. He was taken off the field after the Australian team doctor Richard Shaw examined his condition on the field.Steve Smith has been ruled out of the remainder of the second Ashes Test.Marnus Labuschagne has been confirmed as his concussion replacement.#Ashes pic.twitter.com/ienFwUpInKICC (@ICC) August 18, 2019″Steve has been closely monitored by medical staff overnight and this morning reported that after sleeping well, he woke with “a bit of a headache and a feeling of grogginess.” Steve reported that his left arm which was also struck during his innings yesterday was “much better”.”As part of the Cricket Australia concussion protocol, repeat concussion testing of Steve Smith was also performed this morning and demonstrated some deterioration from his testing which is consistent with the emergence of the symptoms he was reporting.advertisement”On that basis Steve has been withdrawn from the match by team doctor Richard Saw and the Australia team will lodge an application for a concussion substitute with the ICC match referee in line with the ICC protocol,” Cricket Australia said in a statement on Sunday.Smith was on 80 when he was hit and was given a standing ovation by the crowd at the home of cricket as he walked off the ground before returning to the crease about 40 minutes later following the dismissal of Peter Siddle.Smith was eventually dismissed for 92 by Chris Woakes as Australia scored 250 in reply to England’s first innings total of 258.Smith underwent further concussion tests on the morning of the final day at Lords and has reportedly been ruled out. He is now a serious doubt for the third test at Headingley, which gets underway on Thursday. The five-day concussion protocol could rule him out, although it is unclear how the rule will be interpreted. The Aussies though, ended the day’s play in a commanding position after having reduced the hosts to 96 for 4 in 32.2 overs with Ben Stokes (16*) and Jos Buttler (10*) as the overnight batsmen.Pat Cummins and Peter Siddle made early inroads with two wickets each before Stokes and Buttler made sure no more wickets were lost. Also Read | People who booed Steve Smith at Lord’s not cricket fans: Mitchell JohnsonAlso Read | Ashes 2nd Test: Jofra Archer’s hostile spell reminds Ricky Ponting of 2005 seriesAlso Read | Ashes, 2nd Test: Steve Smith clears concussion protocol after Jofra Archer blitzAlso Read | Fans slam Jofra Archer for smiling after nasty bouncer to Steve SmithFor sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports.
